Rancho Los Cerritos Interactive Telephone
Tall Ship Productions designed and fabricated an interactive museum artifact that invites visitors to engage with history through touch and sound.
This project was created in collaboration with Museum Pros, LLC, who led exhibit design and implementation, while Tall Ship Productions developed the interactive technology to meet the museum's goals for engaging visitors.
The Challenge
The museum needed an exhibit that felt authentic to the period while delivering reliable modern interactivity for daily visitor use.
The Process
- Step 1Disassembled and documented the original rotary-style telephone to preserve visual authenticity while opening a path for modern electronics.
- Step 2Integrated a compact audio playback module and custom trigger wiring that fires cleanly when the handset is lifted.
- Step 3Refinished and reassembled the pedestal unit, replaced worn components, and tuned playback for a natural visitor interaction.
The Result
The finished installation now lives in the El Hogar / Home section, where guests pick up the handset and immediately hear a place-based historical narrative.
